How to Choose the Right Compressed Air Filter

A compressed air filter protects your compressed air system by removing contaminants that can damage equipment, reduce product quality, and shorten the life of downstream air treatment components. Selecting the correct filter depends on airflow (SCFM), connection size, operating pressure, and the contaminants that must be removed.

What Should You Consider?

  • Air Flow (SCFM): Select a filter rated at or above your compressor's maximum airflow.
  • Connection Size: Match the filter port size to your piping whenever practical.
  • Operating Pressure: Verify the filter is rated for your system pressure.
  • Filter Grade: Choose Grade X, Y or Z based on the contaminants you need to remove.
  • Future Expansion: Select the next larger model if additional airflow is expected.
  • Where Should a Compressed Air Filter Be Installed?

    Install filters after the receiver tank and bulk water separator whenever possible. For the highest air quality, the recommended sequence is Water Separator → Grade X → Grade Y → Desiccant Air Dryer → Grade Z.

Understanding SAF Filter Grades

Different applications require different levels of filtration. Super-Dry offers three filtration grades designed to work together for complete compressed air treatment.

Grade Z activated carbon filters should be installed after a Grade Y coalescing filter. They are designed to remove oil vapours, odours and taste—not bulk liquid oil.

What does a compressed air filter do?

It removes solid contaminants and, depending on the grade, oil aerosols and oil vapours from compressed air.

What is the difference between Grade X, Grade Y and Grade Z?

Grade X removes 1.0 micron particles. Grade Y removes 0.01 micron particles and oil aerosols. Grade Z uses activated carbon to remove oil vapours, odours and taste, achieving residual oil content down to 0.003 ppm.

Do I need a water separator before the filter?

Yes. Removing bulk liquid water first extends filter element life and improves filtration performance.

Can a compressed air filter remove water vapour?

No. Water vapour requires a desiccant air dryer.

Can Grade Z replace Grade Y?

No. Grade Z is intended as a final polishing filter and should always be installed after a Grade Y filter.

How do I choose the correct filter size?

Select the model based on maximum SCFM, connection size and operating pressure.

How often should the filter element be replaced?
